Sense of Smell (Olfaction)
Simon has been interested in smell since working as a research fellow with Prof V Lund and Dr Glenis Scadding in the Rhinology research laboratory at the Royal National Throat, Nose and Ear Hospital in 2006.
His holds an MPhil for investigating the physics of the vibrational theory of olfaction from the department of Physics and Astronomy, UCL.
He is part of the new CORA: Centre for Olfactory Research and Application at the University of London, and was one of the first, together with Prof Claire Hopkins to identify smell loss as an important characteristic of COVID-19 infection.
Nasal polyps
Mr Gane has been the Principle Investigator on several studies of treatments for Chronic Rhinosinusitis with Nasal Polyposis (nasal polyps). He is the co-consultant in the Complex Rhinology clinic at the Royal National Ear, Nose and Throat and Eastman Dental Hospitals specialising in this disease.
He has a special interest in the application of a novel group of medications: monoclonal antibodies in nose, ear and throat conditions.
